Nancy Pelosi is no longer House speaker, but is she planning to run for another term representing San Francisco in Congress? The assumption has been that this term is Pelosi’s swan song, and she will retire when it expires at the end of 2024.
But Pelosi, now known as Speaker Emerita, a title created just for her, hasn’t said for sure whether she will run again next year or not, and there are signs that she may decide to keep her seat for at least two more years. She certainly seems to be enjoying her lighter load in Congress, not sitting on any committees, not having to lead legislative battles, not having to raise money every weekend. She’s more relaxed and enjoying her role as a party elder and advisor on call. The assumption has been that she’s taking a victory lap, and ready to pass the baton to a new generation in San Francisco, and that’s why younger lawmakers have been laying the groundwork to seek her seat in the House. But maybe not so fast: Pelosi could still decide to run again in 2024.
