St. Augustine said of the gospel of John that it was deep enough for an elephant to swim and shallow enough for a child not to drown. The first 18 verses of the gospel, commonly known as the Prologue, show forth the infinite depth of God's most perfect revelation of himself in the person of Jesus Christ, the eternally begotten Son and Word of God.
