In episode 8 of the PRP, Adam breaks bread with seasoned runner and perpetual student of the sport, Gabby Ring who has been preparing for the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon on November 6th, 2021. Gabby shares her story of discovering running after graduating from the University of Michigan without a concrete plan of what was to come next. At a time in her life when so much was up in the air, running quickly became the primary pillar of her identity and enabled her to discover, prepare and succeed in her professional and personal life. Gabby elates listeners with a review of her extremely regimented preparation and training camp leading into Indy. Did someone say running valedictorian? Decide for yourself as Gabby effortlessly rattles off reviews of past runs and plans for future workouts. When asked what her goal for the race is, the response is short and to the point; with the amount of work she has put in over the past couple years, the undeniable target is sub 3-hour or bust!
Zachary Ornelas, a local legend and professional runner, who is also Gabby's coach, joins the show as guest host and offers his qualified insight into race preparation and performance. Adam and Zach get vulnerable early on and discuss how the recent birth of his first child, who he and his wife have appropriately named Miles, has affected his relationship with the sport. Does having children slow you down or speed you up? Gabby, Zach and Adam take a deep dive into the many layers of Strava and go back and forth discussing what the biggest benefits of the platform are. Before Zach departs the show to attend to some very important "dad bath duty" he offers Gabby some key advice about how to mentally approach and conquer race week.
Gabby takes Adam and the PRP to uncharted territory when a discussion about code brown naturally evolves into a conversation about code red. Are there certain times of the month when female runners can obtain higher levels of performance compared to others? Gabby offers her astute view points into this vast topic based on some of her own experiences and some extensive research she has done online. The two close out the episode with an in depth conversation about cold weather running and Gabby shares her Macklemore-esk approach to acquiring dope running gear or "drip" as we like to call it.
