The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with 2.3 million people in American prisons, and in the past few decades there has been an unsettling increase of women in prison. In this podcast, we cover the topic of injustices faced by women in the prison, the role of motherhood when families are separated by the justice system, and the power of feminism in a place that strips power and dignity from incarcerated individauls.
You can now check out the documentary The Grey Area: Fmeinism Behind Bars from the Alkek library thanks to Rebecca Farinas, Craig Hanks, and other faculty members of the Texas State University Philosophy department.
For further reading, we recommend the article by Jane Addams, "If Men were Seeking the Franchise," from which we pulled the quote for our topic introduction, and Temi Ikudayisi’s article in the University Star, “Tampons in prison are a basic necessity.”
