Ep. 252: Behind the Science of Beauty: How Products Are Really Made - Milan Scott
On this week’s episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Milan Scott to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Milan, aka The Cosmescientist, is a Master of Science in Cosmetic Chemistry and the CEO of Keseana Cosmetic Labs, a cosmetic research and development laboratory based in the DC/MD/VA area (DMV).
With a vibrant online presence as “The Cosmescientist,” Milan educates her followers on the intersection of science and beauty, covering topics like new product developments, formulation science, cosmetic testing, and marketing. Her personal brand is grounded in three core values: mentorship, service, and advocacy. Milan is passionate about showing her audience that science is sexy, playing on the fact that she develops beauty products for a living, while inspiring beauty lovers, especially people of color, to take an interest in STEM.
To further her passion, Milan has established the Keseana STEM Scholarship, an annual grant for graduating high school seniors pursuing higher education in STEM. She is a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, a 2022 30 under 30 Changemaker Award Recipient, and has been featured in various publications, including The Sun and New Beauty Magazine.
During our chat we talked about her changing career paths to become a cosmetic chemist, what it’s like developing products that are in Target and Sephora, the difference between high-end and drugstore products, the process of developing a product and budget requirements, balancing motherhood and so much more.
