Today is lesson #18 and it's all about L-tyrosine supplementation!
Does L-tyrosine help improve your thyroid function? Can taking it improve your adrenal function? Should you actually take it? We are going to explore all of these questions.
L-tyrosine is a synthetic version of a protein known as tyrosine which can be taken as a supplement.
Tyrosine is a protein in your body, created from phenylalanine, which your body uses to create several important hormones including melanin, epinephrine, and thyroxine (T4).
Low levels of tyrosine can be seen in people who exhaust tyrosine stores in the body from stress and also from poor diet or a protein depleted diet.
Low levels may then result in diminished thyroid and adrenal hormone and thus certain symptoms.
But does taking tyrosine actually improve your symptoms?
The answer is maybe.
Tyrosine supplementation can be used to improve thyroid hormone (provided you have normal iodine levels) and works in many people with hypothyroidism.
L-tyrosine levels have been shown to be reduced in people with hypothyroidism and taking thyroid hormone has also been shown to increase metabolism of this protein.
Those with hypothyroidism may have two reasons for having low levels in their body.
In adrenal health, chronic and prolonged stress may result in diminished tyrosine stores as your body struggles to produce more and more stress hormones.
Many studies have shown that supplementing with L-tyrosine may help provide your body with adrenal hormone precursors which can help increase your stress response and even help with symptoms such as depression.
Using as little as 50 to 500mg per day can help reduce the symptoms of Tyrosine deficiency and may be helpful in people who have adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism.
For the most benefit, L-tyrosine should be used with other nutrients to help with your thyroid and with your adrenals.
Combining it with supplements such as zinc, selenium, guggul and adrenal adaptogens may improve your response.
I use 175mg of Tyrosine in my thyroid adrenal reset complex which I find to be sufficient for most people. You can learn more about that supplement here: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/
