Harley-Davidson sells fewer motorcycles and makes more money; revitalizing the brand is top priority, leaders say; stock price soars

In a conference call with investment analysts on Tuesday, Jochen Zeitz, Harley's chairman, president and CEO, made it abundantly clear that market share and sales volume declines are not the company's major focus right now.

"We will not pursue growth just for growth's sake," Zeitz said.

Harley-Davidson has tightened its inventory and eliminated promotional pricing, even as competitors have increased theirs, Zeitz said.

Harley is also exiting international markets where sales are flat to non-existent to focus on its markets in North America, Europe and some portions of the Asia-Pacific region.
