Shyama and her husband Nihal founded St Judes India Child Care Centres in Mumbai after their return to India after spending 22 years outside the country. They were inspired after their interaction with doctors at Tata Memorial Hospital India. They set up the first St Judes centre in Parel, Mumbai in 2006 to provide a home away from home for children undergoing cancer treatment. These children, accompanied by their parents, come from small villages and distant towns where medical treatment for cancer is not available.
Shyama was born in Mumbai and has retained close links to the city throughout her life. Shyama opted for a career in management and worked professionally with a leading nationalised Indian bank. Twenty years of experience in this field disciplined her in dealing with a cross section of society and in the feasibility and administration of project finance.
