John Lardas Modernis professor of religious studies at Franklin & Marshall College. He is the author of The Bop Apocalypse: The Religious Visions of Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs and Secularism in Antebellum America, the latter also published by the University of Chicago Press. Alison Renna is a PhD candidate studying the history of ideas. In her dissertation, “The Symbiotic Mind: A History of Religion, Ecology, and the Microbial World,” she writes about the ways that religion, social theory, philosophy, ecology, neuroscience, and psychology shaped one another through the twentieth century, beginning with the birth of information theory in the 1940s and ending with research into the human microbiome-brain connection in the 2010s.
