On this episode of WellBuilt, Jon had the pleasure of speaking with Kristina Saffran, Co-Founder and CEO of Equip.
Equip provides fully virtual treatment to people with anorexia, bulimia, and atypical eating disorders.
They’ve based their treatment model on the gold standard of care, Family-Based Treatment — a 5-person care team that includes a family mentor, peer mentor, dietician, therapist, and medical provider.
Kristina was diagnosed with anorexia at ten years old. And she and her family were introduced to FBT after four hospitalizations and many relapses.
Kristina basically dedicated her life to this work after getting better. At the age of 15, she started a non-profit with the mission to raise money for patients who did not have financial access to treatment. This got her familiar with the broken system and got her passionate about creating a more accessible model
In their conversation, Jon and Kristina dug into the ways eating disorders have been misrepresented. There are many different types of people dealing with eating disorders that don’t get the attention they deserve.
What made this episode even more personal is Jon's own challenges with food and eating. Kristina left him and our listeners with some interesting questions:
- How often do you think about food?
- How often do you think about your body and weight?
- Do you want to think about them less? And what would it do for your mental health, focus, and attention if you could think about other things instead?
Enjoy!
