Elsewhere, Novak Djokovic fought his way past Hubert Kurkacz in four sets while on the women's side Madison Keys saw off Mirra Andreeva after a come-from-behind win. The American was a set and a break down, before winning in three sets.

Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur had more comfortable wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Petra Kvitova respectively.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune both enjoyed four sets wins over Matteo Berrettini and Grigor Dmitrov.
