593. Part 1 of our conversation with Nick Douglas about the documentary he is working on about the relationship between jazz and civil rights, “I am working with my filmmaking
partner Doug Harris on a documentary called The Reconnect: The Untold
History of Jazz
. It is a true story about the actual formation of jazz
in the only place it could have formed: New Orleans. But it is more it
identifies for the first time New Orleans as the cradle of the Civil
Rights Movement. It shows how jazz and jazz musicians used jazz and
musical performances to fund and support the civil rights movement long
before most people realize the movement started. It answers questions
about jazz and the civil rights movement that have never been exposed.

Octave: The Untold History of Two Creole Families and Slavery in
Louisiana.
 Nick is an MBA with a background in international business.
Born in Oakland, California, Nick grew up in a multi-generational Creole
home. As a child he had a close connection to his grandmother and
great-grandmother, who were both Creoles from New Orleans.

    parish DA Jim Garrison acquitted in Pinball Bribery Case.

  3. This week in New Orleans history. June 1927. Airline Highway
    originally was a two-lane road that ran from Prairieville to
    Shrewsbury (now Metairie). The first section, running between
    Williams Boulevard in Kenner and Shrewsbury Road, opened in
    June 1927. It was begun by the Jefferson Parish Police Jury as
    a local road and incorporated into the plan for Airline
    Highway during construction.
