In the late 50s Fidel Castro ascended to the role of Cuban Prime Minister and then the President, remaining in power for decades. During his reign he reformed healthcare and education but was also seen as a dictator who forced many Cubans to flee the country. He also offended the US government by essentially sticking his middle finger up at them which led to the many attempts on his life by the CIA. Some of them were incredibly funny.
