The Romanov family ruled Russia for centuries but after the loss of millions of lives during the first World War and the country descending into economic chaos the people lost faith in them. The final ruler, Nicholas, abdicated the throne in 1917 and went into hiding with his family but eventually they were said to have been found and killed by firing squad in 1918.
