In this episode, Dr. Sara Helvey speaks with Dr. Nirav Shah, Neurologist, entrepreneur, and partner at Physician on FIRE. Dr. Shah started his career in medicine specializing in neurology, stroke, and neuroimaging before starting and successfully funding a startup called Alertive Healthcare, a company that went on to pioneer the use of digital health sensors to monitor patients’ cardiac health using reimbursable Remote Physiologic Monitoring (RPM). Nirav and his partner Jorge Sanchez later sold that company to Carbon Health. Among his many roles as a physician, innovator, creator, and father, he partnered with the online platform called Physician on FIRE. This online experience offers expertise and advice to other physicians and high-income earners looking to expand their streams of income and follow the FIRE pathway (Financial Independence, Retire Early). Physician on FIRE is dedicated to assisting these individuals in taking control of their finances to enjoy a worry-free retired life. Dr. Shah’s new journey is about helping fellow physicians and others achieve financial freedom and optional retirement so they can pursue their aspirations and dreams.
In this episode, we discuss the 12 steps of investing as well as some of the common ways that physicians and other high earners can start their path to financial freedom. We continue the conversation by talking about some ways to budget and a high-level overview of several areas of financial planning. Dr. Shah offers advice on how to get started on improving one’s financial position and then more advanced steps to take along the way.
