Interview with Carmen Jaquier, director of Thunder, presented at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival in the program strand “Europe! Voices of Women in Film”.
Thunder: In the summer of 1900, the pious 17-year-old Elisabeth learns of the death of her sister Innocente. Snatched from the nunnery where she intended to spend her life, she returns home to the Valais Valley, where her sister’s name has become taboo. Then, an encounter with three boys from the village and Innocente’s hidden diary awakens something in Elisabeth. Thunder, Carmen Jacquier’s debut film, draws on the staggering beauty of mountains and rivers, even dark and wild, as Elizabeth’s desire can be, poised between discovery and devotion to God. With Carmen, we talk about how this film is born, so intense and “wild”, like the forests in which it is shot. But the director also reflects on the idea of sisterhood, understood as support between women, especially in the light of her selection for the program: Europe! Voices of Women in Film.
