My wife isn't just a full professor of Social Work, she's also a licensed couples therapist.  In her view, secrets typically don't age well in relationships, especially when it comes to money. 

As a financial guy myself, I can say that there is certainly a trust issue here.  First, the woman who feels she needs to hide money from her husband was probably taught this approach by someone who has endured some kind of financial trauma.  Secondly, a hard working spouse paying all the bills isn't typically going to be so happy to hear that their partner is spending their money like a 17 year old with no responsibilities.
