Today is all about caloric restriction and why this type of dieting doesn't lead to long-lasting weight loss.
Calorie restriction causes certain changes in the body which lead to an energy deficit and a reduction in body mass.
People generally only think of calorie restriction in this way and they believe that by reducing their calories they will be able to lose weight and keep it off.
The problem and the reason it doesn't work is that you need to be looking beyond these two changes and you need to see how these changes affect other systems in the body.
The reduction in body weight and energy deficit from calorie restriction result in a change known as metabolic adaptation.
This adaptation is the response your body uses to increase appetite and slow down your metabolism.
As your metabolism slows, you gain back the weight you lost and you increase the amount of food that you consume.
But the problem is that this damage to your metabolism persists for years, even after you stop your diet.
This response is why it is felt that around 99% of all calorie restricted diets fail and it is the main reason you always regain your weight back after your diet.
Dieting has an impact on your resting energy expenditure and it tends to lower this value.
You can break down your metabolism in the following ways:
- 70% = resting energy expenditure (your metabolism or BMR)
- 15% = non-exercise activity thermogenesis
- 10% = thermic effect of food
- 5% = exercise activity thermogenesis (the number of calories that you burn from exercise)
When you damage your metabolism you damage your resting energy expenditure which accounts for 70% of your total calorie burn!
No matter how much you exercise, you will never be able to make up for this damage.
All of these reasons together explain why calorie-restricted diets are doomed to fail.
