Barzillai was a old man who had compassion on David when David was no longer the revered king of Israel. His kindness put his own life at risk, but Barzillai was not afraid to associate himself with those who were dismissed by others. Christ is the supreme example of demonstrating love to unlovely people - so too should his followers be willing to love the outcasts of society.
