Tom won a gold medal in 1992 in the summer Paralympic games in Barcelona Spain also Paralympian in 1996 in the Atlanta games as an American wheelchair racer. He has set many different wheelchair world records and in 1995 was the US record holder in the 1,500-mile race. He has competed multiple times in the Boston marathon. In 1994 he finished second and in 1996 finished third. He is still considered among the top 20 best wheelchair racing athletes in history.  His fastest marathon time is 1.22.52 set at Boston in 1994. After retiring from wheelchair racing in 2000 he then started work in the Urology field where he is still a consultant today. The way he responded to the accident that left him in a wheelchair defined his life and success. It is an attitude that anyone can use to respond to anything going on in their life.
