Our goal in this episode is to deepen our understanding of the book of Revelation in its historical, cultural, and political contexts through a discussion of the book’s portrayal of the Roman Empire as a source of idolatry and injustice, intimately bound up with the forces of evil that are opposed to God and God’s people. Building on the conversation in the previous episode, Chris and Jon focus particular attention on the language associated with Babylon and the imagery associated with beasts, both of which function symbolically in the book’s critique of Rome and the imperial cult throughout the book of Revelation.
