Genesis 12 is one of the most important chapters in the Old Testament because it begins to show us God's plan for the world; as He calls Abraham to establish a new nation of people dedicated to Him. Chapter 12 lays the foundation for much of what unfolds through the rest of scripture. Join us for another key study in a key chapter of God's Word!
GENESIS KEY CHAPTERS DISCUSSION AND THOUGHT QUESTIONS: The following discussion questions can stand alone or be used in conjunction with the Key Chapters podcast. They can be used in a Small Group, family discussion, or for personal reflection. The idea is that the person/group/family will have read the Key Chapter and then answer the questions. Perhaps there would be time to listen to the podcast as well.
1. The podcast said that Genesis 12 is one of the most important chapters in the Bible, yet it is not one that we talk about much. Why is this chapter so important?
2. Genesis 12 opens with Abram (Abraham) being 75 years old and living in the northern area of Haran, in modern day Turkey. When God calls Abram to “Go forth from your country”, what kind of impact would this command have had on Abram’s life. How did Abram respond? How is that a model for our responses to God’s commands?
3. Verses 2 and 3 contain a series of promises that we call “The Abrahamic Covenant”. What were theses promises? What do they indicate about God, His plan of redemption, and the kind of blessings He would pour out upon Abram and his descendants?
4. These promises indicate that God intended to create a new nation, though the lineage of Abram, who would be a nation of God-obeyers. What are some ways in which this new nation be different than the nations of the world that we saw back in Genesis 11? How is this demonstrated in the life of believers today?
5. In verses 6 & 7, the Lord appeared to Abram at the Oak of Moreh which was a common place of pagan worship. What did Abram build there? Think about this radical action, how did Abram have such faith and courage? What does this kind of faith and courage look like in our walk with God today?
6. The podcast mentioned that there are physical descendants of Abram and also spiritual descendants of Abram who have embraced God’s New Covenant in the New Testament by faith. Have you accepted God’s covenantal offer to join in this nation of God-obeyers? What does this look like in your life?
