Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones of New York is on the emergency panel to discuss gun reform legislation Thursday. The hearing has predictably gone the way gun safety legislation hearings always go with the bought and paid for Republican Party. Democrats call for a series of modest gun safety protections. The Republican Party attacks this with a devil’s three-pronged pitchfork: calls to wait and see; claims that the Democratic Party is trying to steal your guns and take away your rights; and assertions that gun laws don’t do anything to stop gun violence—which we know because we’ve never had any, and it’s going so great without them. There’s a fourth prong, but it is more of the general blood money mantra of the conservative death cult: We need more guns.
