PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Mark Cousins, director of the film March on Rome.

Mark Cousins talks about his latest film, March on Rome, presented at the Giornate degli Autori independent section of the 79th Venice International Film Festival. The film depicts the ascent of Fascis in Italy and its fallout across 1930s Europe. Cousins also talks with us about his connection to Italy, masculinity and performance, and the archival centrepiece of his film: Umberto Paradisi’s 1922 propaganda film, A Noi.

The March on Rome: Through little-seen archival material and his characteristically cinematic analysis, Mark Cousins narrates the ascent of fascism in Italy and its fall-out across 1930s Europe. In The March on Rome, which is simultaneously an essay film and a historical document, Cousins contextualises history through the here and now, holding a mirror up to a political landscape marked by a creeping far right and manipulated media.
