On 9 February 1949, on a cold windy day, a corpse floating in a wicker trunk was discovered in the Puits d'Enfer chasm in Les Sables-d'Olonne. Only one element makes it possible to identify the victim, the initials "R.T." sewn into his suit. Two culprits are in the police's sights: Andree Farre, a housekeeper, and her lover Roland Plannet, a young idler.
