Japan's arcades are facing game over

Japanese gaming arcades are on their last life | The Japan Times

Although time and technology marched on, arcades always had a certain charm that couldn’t be replaced by better graphics or central processing units. They were places you could go out of nostalgia, time machines to another era, and, most importantly, where you could interact with like-minded people. This appeal wasn’t limited to traditional gamers; in 2010 Nikkei reported that arcades were increasingly becoming social hubs for the elderly. One 65-year-old said going to the arcade and making loads of friends was “like being in a dream.”

Epic v. Google, explained

The Epic v. Google lawsuit finally makes sense - The Verge

The Apple lawsuit made a lot of sense from the get-go. But until just recently, the suit against Google was a bit more mysterious. Not anymore!

On Thursday, Judge James Donato unsealed a fully unredacted version of Epic’s original complaint against Google (via Leah Nylen), and it alleges the company was so worried about Epic setting a precedent by abandoning the Play Store that it unleashed a broad effort to keep developers from following the company’s lead. That included straight-up paying top game developers, including Activision Blizzard to stick around, and sharing additional chunks of its revenue with phone makers if they agreed not to preinstall any other app stores.

Shades of Microsoft in the 1990s. Maybe after Epic, it'll be the DOJ bringing an antitrust suit?
