The sequel to “I am a legend” will see the light of day. Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan will be the main actors, and the feature film should be based on the alternative end of the film by Francis Lawrence, and not the one seen in theaters in 2007. But how will Will Smith be able to return in the sequel to I Am Legend? This is one of the questions that the public was asking when the feature film was finally made official, after years of rumors that did not come to fruition. Announced in March 2022, the film is still relevant as confirmed by screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman, while one could have had doubts in view of the chaos caused by the slap given by the star to Chris Rock at the last Oscars. But the actor will be there, alongside Michael B. Jordan, new recruit of the film which Francis Lawrence will direct, as for the first opus. And an interview given by Akiva Goldsman to Deadline helps to understand how Will Smith can be back, when his character was dead at the end of the previous feature film. “[L’histoire] will begin a few decades after that of the first. I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just after the apocalypse, but also twenty-thirty years later. We see how the Earth is taking back control of the world, and there is something beautiful in this question: now that man is no longer really the main tenant, what is going on? “Mostly there will be images of New York. I don’t know if they’ll scale the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless. We’re going back to the original book by Richard Matheson as well as the alternate ending of the film, as opposed to the one seen in theaters. Matheson was talking about when man’s status as the dominant species on the planet came to an end. It’s something very interesting that we will be able to explore.” After Doctor Sleep, which was both a sequel to Stephen King’s book and its very free adaptation by Stanley Kubrick, I Am Legend 2 will therefore attempt another type of tightrope walker, starting with an end that is not the one that the general public knows. And in which the hero played by Will Smith did not die, which therefore explains the possibility of his return. In this alternate ending, seen on video editions of I Am Legend, the question of Good and Evil was more nuanced, as Robert Neville discovered that the leader of the infected was just looking to find his companion whom he was keeping in his lab, not kill her. And that he had become a monster in their eyes, which prompted him to abandon his research to find a cure, and go in search of a colony of survivors.
