Low sex drive in women is a serious problem and should be evaluated as soon as possible.
In this video I go over the most common causes of low sex drive and decreased libido in women including how to correctly diagnose and treat the problem.
One of the main causes of low sex drive is low testosterone. Low testosterone is an important factor in women as it relates to libido, muscle mass (and weight loss), mood and quality of life.
What's interesting is that there is a strong link between low testosterone and decreased libido in many women. And many conditions that you might not realize contribute to low testosterone in one way or another.
For this reason, evaluating your testosterone is very important and replacing those levels may be necessary in some women.
Here are the top 9 reasons for Low sex drive in women:
1) Low testosterone
- Make sure to check both free and total serum testosterone levels
2) Hypothyroidism or autoimmune thyroiditis
- Check a complete thyroid panel
3) Vaginal atrophy
- Consider the use of topical/transdermal estriol or systemic bio identical hormone replacement therapy
4) Insulin resistance
- Check serum fasting insulin, blood glucose and hgb A1c
- Take insulin sensitizing supplements if necessary
5) Depression and other mood disorders
- Get evaluated and naturally treat depression if present (avoid SSRI's if possible as these may worsen sex drive)
6) Your partner may have low testosterone
- Manage your partners libido and testosterone levels if necessary
7) Weight gain
- Weight gain itself may cause low libido, make sure to address all hormone imbalances and treat accordingly (see post for more details and case studies on weight loss)
8) High stress levels
- Consider adrenal adaptogens (like ashwagandha) or adrenal glandulars
9) Medications
- Narcotics, anti depressants, diabetic medications and blood pressure medications may be contributing to sex drive (don't go off medications but discuss options with your provider)
