The "Your Story" Series
In this week’s episode we are being joined by a mother daughter team! Dr Lesley Williams and her 9 year old daughter Leyla discuss the book that was written by Dr Williams after her daughter’s experience with body shaming at school.
As you know, this season’s theme is “Your Story” and we are excited about the angle of this episode because we are hearing two stories in this interview. We get to hear Leyla’s body story that she has already begun to write in her short life as well as hear the story from a Mama’s perspective about what it is like to watch her daughter’s story unfold. It brings to light the importance of having a home environment that is inclusive, that discusses bullying, confidence, race, and cultural narratives in age appropriate ways, and yet we touched on how there is still a bigger, badder, world out there that will impact our children regardless of the environment we create at home.
A big piece of this story for us as parents is learning how to love on our littlest ones and guide them to the best of our ability, but knowing that we cannot protect them for everything, just to prepare them. As Dr William’s book is called, “Free to Be Me,” we hope that this next generation is even more free to be themselves than previous generations and that society continues to heal in so many ways.
