Results are now out from the first round of independent tests of air quality near the Sterigenics plant in Smyrna. They came out during Monday’s meeting of the community’s Air Quality Oversight Committee, and GPB’s Ross Terrell was there. A 2018 Environmental Protection Agency report indicated the facility there – and the BD Bard plant in Covington – had been emitting ethylene oxide for years, despite the EPA’s declaring it a carcinogen in 2016. The report also indicated the amount of the gas was high enough to produce an elevated risk of cancer in those communities.
