In episode 6 of the PRP, Adam connects with first time marathoner, public health guru and vegan food blogger Kayla Romero who has been preparing for the Detroit Free Press Marathon on October 17th, 2021. Kayla sheds some insight on what inspired her to gear up for this challenge, how she decided to prepare and admits that perhaps there was a bit too much Googling done throughout the process. Kayla gets vulnerable as she takes listeners on the journey of her growth as a runner; from last summer, when a 10-miler was unthinkable, to this summer when she was knocking out double digit runs every weekend. Kayla's story is a text book example of the importance of a strong mental game when preparing to tackle a goal of this magnitude. As her training began to blossom, so did her perspective on what she felt was possible for her to accomplish.
Guest host, Evan Romero, who is Kayla's husband enlightens listeners with the tale of how the two met back in college. Did someone say forbidden love? Evan is also a first time marathoner who is gearing up to run with Kayla in Detroit. Evan admits that although it was his original idea to run the marathon, Kayla has been the heart and soul of putting together the training plan and lining up their weekend long runs. The couple puts on an incredible display of how a healthy and productive relationship should function as it pertains to being involved in the same sport. The balancing act of of being competitive vs. being compassionate is a true art form, and the two seem to have cracked the code on knowing when to push each other vs. knowing when to have empathy for one another.
To cap the episode Kayla, Evan and Adam take a deep dive into race morning "code brown" routines, and discuss how many poops is the right amount of poops before hitting the starting line. Are they single deucers, double deucers or perhaps triple deucers?! Tune in find out!
