As we continue in our study in the book of Genesis, we now move to Genesis 2, which gives us a closer, more intimate look at the creation of Adam and Eve. In this chapter, we find profound truths about who we are and God's purposes for our lives. And as we rest in God's purposes and design for mankind, we will find our ultimate fulfillment. Join us!
GENESIS KEY CHAPTERS DISCUSSION AND THOUGHT QUESTIONS: The following discussion questions can stand alone or be used in conjunction with the Key Chapters podcast. They can be used in a Small Group, family discussion, or for personal reflection. The idea is that the person/group/family will have read the Key Chapter and then answer the questions. Perhaps there would be time to listen to the podcast as well.
1. In verse 2, what did God do when He finished His work of creation? Is God still not working?
2. Notice that verse 2 does not end with the familiar phrase “and it was good”? What are some possible implications for this omission?
3. In verse 4, God is called “the Lord”. What does this name mean?
4. In verse 7, what makes mankind different than other animals? What does the podcast say about the “breath” that is referred to in this verse? How might this affect our view of people we don’t “like”, or the unborn, or the infirmed?
5. What were the two trees that were planted in the Garden of Eden. What were they for?
6. What does the podcast tell us about the reason that Adam was to cultivate the garden?
7. The podcast mentioned using all that God has given us (from stuff, to science, to beauty, etc) for God’s glory. What are some ways that you could use what God has given you to do or produce something that brings Him glory?
8. What was the suggestion given by the podcast for understanding how Adam could name all the animals so quickly?
9. In verse 18, what is the first thing that’s ever said to be “not good”? What does this tell us about the plan and design of God?
10. How does the separate and distinct creation of Eve establish her dignity in the design of God? How did God honor her?
11. How does the podcast suggest the word “rib” could also be translated?
12. The podcast pointed out that the ultimate prohibition in God’s command to Adam about not eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is that God was telling Adam not to seek to learn about evil. What are some ways (both obvious and subtle) where our society pursues learning about evil?
13. Why do you think God decided it was necessary to clearly state that a husband was to leave his family and be joined to his wife?
