Transformational Life Coach Kendra Williams and I discuss Matrescence. The term was originally coined by an anthropologist Dana Raphael in the 1970's, but this process has been around from the beginning of time. We just put a name to it 50 years ago.
“The seismic shift happens in every slice of the human pie, biologically, psychologically, socially, economically, existentially, ecologically and spiritually,” says Athan. At the same time that a mom’s body might be undergoing postpartum hormonal changes, she might be questioning where she belongs socially. “You feel a lot like the first time you sat down in the cafeteria in high school and [you’re] wondering, who are your people?” says Athan. Your relationships with your family and partner might also undergo a shift. At the same time, you might start to question your values and belief systems.
Kendra and I discuss how this shift doesn't just happen in the early days of assuming the role of mother. It is something that continues for the rest of our lives. As our kids grow and change, so do we. Matrescencce is a never ending invitation and opportunity to grow and expand, lean into our feminine gifts and live life on our own terms.
