The NBA Slam Dunk Contest has been a popular event for many years but you might be able to go back to February 6, 1988 to find the night it really became a big deal.

That All-Star weekend in Chicago featured a classic competition between seven players but Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins stole the show. Those two eventually squared off in the finals and four of their combined dunks would earn a perfect score of 50. It was the other two dunks that were a bit questionable by the judges.

Today we're taking you back to that night in Chicago Stadium and reliving this incredible slam dunk contest.

Here are some of the things we'll be talking about:

  • Old school TBS broadcast
  • A dunk tutorial
  • The love of the word 'flare'
  • Jordan takes off from the free throw line....twice
  • The judges
  • A very non-PC dunk comment
  • Did Dominique have the better performance?

We'll talk all these things and many other observations we had after watching this event more than 30 years later.

If you want to go back and watch it, we've posted the full broadcast on our website here: https://distantreplaypodcast.com/ep-71-1988-slam-dunk-contest/
