Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation: Keep Your Boat Afloat: A Business Survival Guide In COVID-19 Times.

Having experienced COVID-19 near to the source, Daniel Tolson, a frequent guest on the Business Mastermind Podcast, is well-versed to relay a message of hope and optimism to everyone here in the UK. In Taiwan, where Daniel is based, life is beginning to go back to normal, albeit with a few changes.

Daniel is here today to let you know that hope is on the way. Having survived much of the outbreak, the light at the end of the tunnel is clearly visible, and his first-hand experience of getting through the COVID-19 pandemic will be a welcome message of optimism for anyone affected by the crisis.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The Taiwanese government implemented strict controls almost immediately, and as a result, masks, sanitiser, and other necessary materials were not just rationed, but distributed by the government itself. This halted the spread of panic-buying, and ensured that materials were available to all.
  • The grief cycle is incredibly important to understand. All of a sudden, the futures we had planned have evaporated, leading to a sense of loss and misplacement.
  • We need to deal with each concurrent stage of the grief cycle as it comes. The five stages are:
    • Denial
    • Anger
    • Blame
    • Depression
    • Acceptance
  • The Five Levels of Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs are:
    • Survival - Food, nourishment
    • Security - Safety and security
    • Love/Belonging - The need for relationships and a sense of belonging
    • Self-Esteem - Confidence and esteem
    • Self-Actualisation - Becoming everything that we can possibly be
  • Self-actualisation is currently being flipped on its head by COVID-19. Self-made billionaires are suddenly seeing fortunes wiped out, and are reverting to survival needs.
  • For those in need of security, how can you act to ensure your security lasts? Can you bring value to your business in any way? Can you strengthen relationships? Make sure you are a person of high-value.

  • No employer wants to see their people in harm's way. If you're an employee, make sure you give your employer the benefit of the doubt, as in most cases, they will be doing everything they can to make sure you're taken care of.
  • We are designed to survive. This will pass, and we should remain positive. Remember that mere survival right now is completely acceptable, and we'll be better off as a species when it's over. Ask for help if you need it, and don't feel ashamed for focusing on your survival.

BEST MOMENTS

'They're not vitamins - they're laxatives!'

'The world is still turning. Business is still operating'

‘Denial is not a river in Egypt'

‘Employers will be down at the pawnbrokers right now, I guarantee'

'This too shall pass'
