Episode 031 - Clock Is Ticking On Time Management

Of all the resources we have available to us, "Time" is the singular item that is non-renewable. It doesn't matter who you are or what you do, there are only 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, or 86,400 seconds in every day…depending on how you to count.

Many of us waste our precious seconds and will never get them back. Time management is cliché, but it's cliché for a reason. IT MATTERS!

Let's craft a plan that works for you and the way you work. The clock is ticking…are you ready?

SHOW NOTES

  • 01:10 – Virtual hug but in person?  YouTube watchers are “missing” so much.
  • 01:37 – Christina is drinking a “Producer Christian”, which is a variation on the “Arnold Palmer”: Coke Zero with a splash of lemonade.
  • 02:08 – How do you say “Arnold Palmer” and who is he? Competitive skydiver.
  • 02:50 – The clock is ticking on your time management. How to frame your days and weeks better.
  • 03:23 – Episode Song: Styx. Debate on adding an “s” to words.
  • 04:20 – Styx: Too Much Time on My Hands; Agents always say you have so much time on their hands and don’t need help.
  • 05:22 – Time management is NOT just a cliché. What does it actually mean and why does it matter? Your business needs it; your mind and well-being needs it; and your family needs it.
  • 07:14 – Cate: Using your time more intentionally and working more effectively to make use of your time.
  • 07:33 – Cate doesn’t like the phrase “work/life balance”, she prefers “work/life integration” or “career lifestyle”. Always working but doing your own thing too. Valuing time more than money. Our personal time and work time are integrated every day. Blending tasks/multitasking – reply to emails while cooking dinner; on laptop outside while kids are swimming in the pool. Doing things you enjoy while working: Lunch dates with friends and networking. Pick a hobby that allows you to build relationships with others.
  • 09:25 – Blocking time but there are things you can do at the same time. Finding ways to blend work into your life so you can be present, handle tasks and complete work.
  • 10:08 – Cate’s Side Note Tangent: Top 10 Hobbies of the rich: collectibles, automobiles, exercise, boating, wine/spirits, politics, running for office, fashion, art, travel, philanthropy.
  • 12:42 – Christian’s hobbies: cars, technology. B: cars, LEGOs, collectables, Star Wars, metal art, building things.
  • 14:25 – Do as we say, not as we do.
  • 14:33 – Planning in a way that works for you. Daily, weekly, and batching are suggestions. B does his weekly and here is what he does.
  • 15:27 – Some people do it daily. Things change and might need to move things around. Designate tasks throughout your day.
  • 16:10 – Cate: Batching – theming your days or batching tasks. Blocking – I’m going to spend ____ hours/minutes on a task. Make sure to build in buffer time so you can be flexible.
  • 17:00 – Things will come about and throw off your schedule. Buffer time gives you flexibility to deal with the unforeseen issues.
  • 17:40 – Prioritize your tasks. Eat the frog or eat the elephant. Time sensitive items take precedent.
  • 18:22 – Prioritize items that you don’t want to do. “Eat the frog”, knock out the difficult task or task you don’t want to do first so it doesn’t occupy your mind all day.
  • 19:05 – Next: Organize your tasks than plan for them. Set out your tasks so you know the progression and what you need to do next. Allot for changes. Nothing but love for Cate.
  • 20:10 – Cate: Software is available. B uses Pages on his iPad to write out what needs to be done each day. Written down so it is not forgotten and not occupying your mind by trying to remember what you needed to do.
  • 20:55 – Thinking about Business items: OINII – On It, Not In It. Transactional items are “in” your business”, but don’t forget to work “on” your business. Marketing, contacts, etc. “In it” is important too, but don’t forget the “on it” items.
  • 22:07 – Make time for yourself, setting a precedent for your clients, co-workers, and your family. Don’t forget your why. Your ability to handle issues because you have planned can show all of those people how great you are and also how “not” great you are.
  • 23:00 – Cate: we have the privilege as an agent to have some flexibility to not be tied to an office desk but be sure to blend your personal and professional lives.
  • 23:26 – Episode Quote: “Time and money. Two great resources you have at your disposal. Only one of them is non-replenishable. Choose wisely what you spend your resources on.” -B. Time is an asset that is wasted.
  • 24:30 – Closing: Time management truly is important for your business, mental health and personal life. The only right way to manage time is to set a plan that works for you. The only wrong path is not doing it at all. Be intentional. Prioritize, organize, and plan your tasks. Don’t forget your OINII. Include all aspects of your life. Your real estate career counts on it. It is not altruistic or cliché, do it.
