Isaiah 46
"The Folly of Idolatry"
An idol is something that gives us great delight (above God) from which we derive significance and without which we have frustration and despair. It is worshiping the created rather than the Creator. Idols are counterfeit gods-- they promise much but cannot deliver. God calls us to repent of idolatry and to gaze at the person of Jesus Christ.
Idols can be ideas as well as objects. Idolatry is costly and burdensome. A sign of idolatry is inordinate anger, discouragement and despair; when we lose the thing we idolize, we are devastated. Common idols are approval, success, significance.
How do we reject idols? We cannot merely turn from them; we must turn to Jesus-- otherwise, it's just an external, temporary solution, because we will end up replacing our current idol with another.
God carries His people, saves His people, and calls them back to Himself-- out of idolatry and into worship of Himself.
