Saludos mara! On this episode of Songmess we are joined by Fran Maravilla and Rebeca Alvarenga of Manyula Dance Club. We caught up with these two Salvadoran musicians in the middle of their recent US tour and were lucky enough to have them join us for an incredible conversation on El Salvador's diverse musical landscape.
The small Central American nation has been marred by a long history of violence that has drowned out much of its rich and unique culture on the global stage. In turn, Fran and Rebeca are heavily involved members of local art and music scenes looking to change mentalities and perceptions at home as well as abroad. This episode features a much deserved backstory on Garífona heritage, cumbia-metal fusions, and a tribute to a magical folk hero of the San Salvador streets.
