We are well over 50% into 2021 - Where are you with your goals?!
Today, Rob discusses his goals for 2021, and getting primed for 2022 goals. He also discusses utilization of an exercise called the "Past Year Review," inspired by Tim Ferriss and expanded upon and refined after years of implementation.
Resources:
"Forget New Year's Resolutions and Conduct a 'Past Year Review' Instead" - Tim Ferriss
Notes:
- Grab a notepad and create two columns: POSITIVE and NEGATIVE.
- Go through your calendar from the last year, looking at every week.
- For each week, jot down on the pad any people or activities or commitments that triggered peak positive or negative emotions for that month. Put them in their respective columns.
- Once you’ve gone through the past year, look at your notepad list and ask, “What 20% of each column produced the most reliable or powerful peaks?”
- Based on the answers, take your “positive” leaders and schedule more of them in the new year. Get them on the calendar now! Book things with friends and prepay for activities/events/commitments that you know work. It’s not real until it’s in the calendar. That’s step one. Step two is to take your “negative” leaders, put “NOT-TO-DO LIST” at the top, and put them somewhere you can see them each morning for the first few weeks of 2019. These are the people and things you *know* make you miserable, so don’t put them on your calendar out of obligation, guilt, FOMO, or other nonsense.
Rob's Notes after performing exercise:
- Peak Triggered Emotions:
- Positive - 55 (2018 - 64)
- Negative - 36 (2018 - 15)
- Columns inserted into an Excel Spreadsheet
- Additional columns to add for filtering each line item by:
- Positive Emotion
- Negative Emotion
- Order of entry (time frame when it was entered during the 2019 calendar year)
- Any action resulting from that emotion
- How it’s rated on a scale of 1-5 regarding joy / non-joy
- For assembling the list of what to schedule in the calendar year and how to assemble your NOT to-do list
- Category of line item
- How it corresponds with my project tracking software
- Financial, Personal, Davis, Health, YMF, DLS, etc
- Categorization and labeling of the Past Year Review in Excel makes for easy prioritization of a longer list
- Easy to refine lists and make actionable tasks that matter instead of resolutions that never get followed through with
- 2020 NOT-To-Do List Generated
- Recurring Task Generated titled: "Schedule 'Positives' for 2020 Calendar Year"
- This recurring weekly task has the Excel spreadsheet attached for ease of reference
- Will review the 2019 Year End Positives during Weekly Review
- Action item based on the past year review that will hopefully result in even greater positives for the following year
