Intro: Welcome. We're entering a new season emphasizing small groups ("Packs"). Why? Because we desire growth – not just knowing about Jesus, but becoming like Him. How does genuine spiritual growth happen? It occurs when our faith steps out and collides with God's faithfulness. Research and observation reveal five key factors consistently present when people experience significant growth. These factors are what we aim to cultivate in our Packs.

Key Points:

  1. Growth Requires Intentionality: We don't just drift into Christ-likeness. While empowered by the Spirit, growth involves our participation and creating environments where faith can flourish.
  2. Five Factors Conducive to Growth:
    • 1. Practical Bible Teaching: Growth happens when we move beyond just hearing God's Word to understanding and applying it to our lives. It requires asking, "What does this mean for me, and what will I do about it?" (cf. Matt 7:24 - hearing and doing).
    • 2. Private Disciplines: Personal engagement with God outside of corporate gatherings – prayer, Scripture reading, reflection in the "secret place" (Matt 6:6). Consistent private connection fuels internal transformation.
    • 3. Personal Ministry: Stepping out to serve or lead in ways that stretch us beyond our comfort zone and perceived abilities. Getting "in over our head" forces reliance on God and accelerates growth (cf. Acts 1:8 - disciples sent).
    • 4. Providential Relationships: Intentional connection with other believers for mutual encouragement, support, accountability, and sharpening (Heb 10:24-25). Living out the "one anothers" of Scripture is vital; deep growth rarely happens in isolation.
    • 5. Pivotal Circumstances: Significant life events – both positive and negative (trials, losses, breakthroughs, transitions) – often become catalysts for growth by testing our faith and forcing deeper reliance on God.
  3. The Growth Dynamic: Faith grows incrementally. We take a small step of obedience or trust, God meets us with His faithfulness, and our faith is strengthened for the next step (e.g., giving generously despite perceived lack, serving when tired, surrendering worry).

Conclusion: Spiritual growth isn't random. It flourishes when practical teaching, private disciplines, stretching ministry, supportive relationships, and life's circumstances converge, prompting us to step out in faith and experience God's faithfulness. Our "Packs" are designed to intentionally cultivate this growth environment.

Call to Action: Don't leave your growth to chance. Engage with these five factors. Commit to a Pack this fall to intentionally pursue growth in community. Apply the teaching you hear. Cultivate private disciplines. Step into serving. Invest in relationships. Navigate life's circumstances together, expecting your faith to grow.
