Sermon Notes:

Intro: What makes a church "good"? Is it programs, size, popularity, biblical teaching, loving community? As we continue studying Jesus' letters to the seven churches, we look at Smyrna. Jesus praises this church, not for what it offered (very little), but for what it endured. It teaches us that faithfulness through suffering, without compromise, is a key mark of a church Jesus commends.

Key Points:

  1. Jesus Knows Smyrna (v. 9): Jesus starts by affirming His knowledge of their reality:
    • Afflictions: Intense suffering and persecution.
    • Poverty: Materially destitute, likely due to their faith isolating them economically.
    • Slander: False accusations, particularly from some threatened by their claims about Jesus.
    • True Riches: Despite material poverty, Jesus declares them spiritually "rich."
  2. The Cost of Faithfulness: Smyrna was in a city demanding emperor worship as proof of loyalty to Rome. Christians refused, viewing Jesus alone as Lord. This refusal led to persecution, slander (being painted as disloyal, dangerous), and economic hardship. They suffered because they wouldn't compromise.
  3. Endurance Without Compromise: Unlike many who ease pressure by compromising beliefs or ethics (like compromising form in exercise when it hurts), Smyrna held fast. Jesus offers no rebuke, only praise and encouragement. (Polycarp's martyrdom illustrates this unwavering commitment).
  4. Suffering Well: Suffering reveals true faith and refines character (1 Pet 1:6-7). Paul and Silas suffering well in prison led to the jailer's conversion (Acts 16). A church that endures hardship faithfully demonstrates the gospel's power.
  5. Jesus' Encouragement to Endure (v. 8, 10-11): Jesus urges them not to fear future suffering ("10 days" = limited period) and gives reasons to be faithful:
    • He is Eternal & Victorious: "First and Last, who died and came to life again." He has ultimate authority and conquered death.
    • He Knows: His empathetic understanding brings comfort.
    • His Perspective is True: He sees their spiritual wealth despite material poverty.
    • He is Honest: He acknowledges suffering is real and coming.
    • He is Purposeful: Suffering tests and proves faith.
    • He is Generous: He promises reward – the "victor's crown" of life and deliverance from the "second death."

Conclusion: Jesus measures church health differently than we often do. He valued Smyrna's unwavering faithfulness and endurance through intense suffering more than any program or material wealth. Their spiritual richness came from clinging to Christ without compromise, even at great cost.

Call to Action:

  • Self-Examination: Where do you compromise under pressure or to avoid suffering/discomfort?
  • Faithfulness: Commit to faithfulness to the gospel message, even when unpopular or costly.
  • Perspective: Remember our relative ease compared to Smyrna and the persecuted church today. Let their example challenge and encourage us.
  • Pray & Give: Pray specifically for the persecuted church globally. Give sacrificially to support brothers and sisters suffering for their faith (mentioning offering for church in Turkey).
  • Remember: Come to the communion table remembering Jesus' ultimate faithfulness through suffering on our behalf.
