In episode 15 of the PRP, Adam sits down with talented ultra marathoner, super dad, public relations strategist and Lansing community cognoscente Zach Crim who has been preparing for the Jackson County 50 Mile on December 4th, 2021. From the onset of the conversation, it's clear that Zach is an individual that doesn't ever pursue anything in life with less than a 100%, full on dedicated approach. Whether that be rocking as super dad for the day, to raising six figures for his local Crim Fitness Foundation by bringing individuals together through the power of sport, to tackling audacious trail racing goals. If Zach gets zero'd in on something, he is going to pursue it aggressively and he is going to approach it with a winning mentality. Although Zach has only been racing since 2019, his history as a competitive wrestler through childhood and college has propelled him to immediately excel in the sport. He shares the tale of incurring repetitive injuries in college which ultimately lead to him stepping away to pursue other interests. Through his twenties he fell away from being consistently physically active, until he had the distinguished honor of bringing new life into the world. The birth of his daughter, Sadie, inspired Zach to get back to being more active, and he quickly found that running ultra marathons were a tremendous outlet that enabled him to scratch his never ending need for adventure while also allowing him to be a present and positive daily influence in his daughter's life.
Chaz Hornburg, equally talented ultra marathoner and Lansing big dog joins the show as guest host and the three take an immediate deep dive into the vast world of FKT's. How many combined FKT's do these gentlemen hold in the great state of Michigan, and how many times have they passed the crown(s) back and forth?! It's clear that the relationship Zach and Chaz share with one another is a primary driver in their love and relentless pursuit of the sport. Zach gets vulnerable and shares his strategy for race preparation and reflects on what he has learned thus far in his career about his tendency to overdue it at times. His recent adoption of the Roche training mentality has helped him tremendously in his ability to let off the gas in certain moments of training camp and trust that his fitness is where it needs to be. He also shares his keen and molded perspective on: being worried vs. being prepared, visualization (of success and failure), embracing pain, taking ownership of the process every single day, and finally his uninterrupted pursuit of constant forward progress and finishing number one, no matter the competition.
What level of praise do these gentlemen provide for female ultra runners? What does Zach's mantra "beware of the chair" mean?! How many consecutive races is Zach's current podium streak at?!?! Did Chaz purpose to his wife at the end of an ultra marathon? What race will Zach and Chaz be facing off against one another at in 2022?! All this and so much more in this inspirational and champion-minded episode of the PRP.
