In the early 19th century, secret societies were having a moment. A professor at Transylvania University’s Medical Department decided it would be a good idea to start one for his students. The Kentucky Chapter of the Kappa Lambda Society of Hippocrates didn’t last long, but the seeds it planted spread all over the country, eventually influencing the formation of the American Medical Association.
