We open the show with a little Tequila!!! Then we get right into a lot of history and talking about the last 100 years of generations and characteristics attached to each generation, from Silent, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials to Gen Z. We begin with a BIG question, what is wrong with Millennials? That leads us to not eating store bought chewy cookies, they stay chewy for a very long time for a reason.
Christian began in landscaping in 2012 fresh and ready to go, Dustin had a variety pack of beginnings, started with his Dad at age 4 doing construction, his Dad fired him a few times, left construction and got into automotive and then studying welding, shifted to studying architecture, worked for ¾ years, missed construction got back into it around 2016. Dustin can build you a deck and fix your car, brilliant.
Is construction education worth it? Is on site experience worth it? Which is more valuable? Talking education, measuring and measuring tapes, a little metric and imperial conversation. Do you know where every earn dollar and spent dollar comes from and goes? The difference between immigrant millennials and privilege North American millennials. Why are our guests in construction, why does a millennial get into construction? Is it for the money? Are millennials bad employees and think they are great employers? What time do millennials arrive on site? What’s with all the avocado toast? That toast is the reason why they are late on site? WTF. Oh wait, they were late because they have kids. Well give the kids up for adoption. Smarten up millennials, it is time to be respectful of the employer and employment. What does our circle of friends say about all us? Here is a new one, female millennials and applying make-up on the job site during the work day.
How do we help this generation work better, smarter, harder? It has to begin with the hunger to work harder, smarter, better. Should we ban phones on our job sites? There is a cost attached to the rate millennials ask for and then there is a cost on top of that for profit, it’s still a business. Is there a problem with weed and millennials? What do millennials really want on the job site? What are their expectations of business owners? How would millennials like it if the general contractors only paid for the hours they worked, not for the hours they were on site? Sometimes you just have to shut your mouth and listen.
Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.
