Internationally acclaimed motivational speaker Simerjeet Singh brings us the inspiring story of Fauja Singh, world's oldest marathon runner. A few years after he turned 80, Fauja Singh lost his wife to old age and subsequently, his son to a construction accident. Having lost all interest in life, he moved in with one of his other sons settled in London. 

However, he was grieving and had lost his sense of purpose in life. During this period, he found a friend who urged him to sign up for a charity marathon. That was the start of his running spree, at the ripe age of 82. Slowly, he won great accolades and was nominated into the Guinness Book of World Records. However, the organization refused his entry on account of his missing birth certificate.

The story is a stark reminder of how accolades do not accompany every achievement and that one must continue to strive for excellence despite that. Most of us, especially in corporate jobs, work for accolades and appreciation. But in reality, appreciation doesn't come to everyone and that does not mean one is incompetent. We must never build our self-worth on the basis of external accolades. Working for awards and name and fame could be a motivation for many, but it can not be the only motivation - it can not become the purpose of one's life.
