Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation: Keep Your Boat Afloat: A Business Survival Guide In COVID-19 Times.

Integral to our physical health is our mental health, and no-one knows more about bolstering the defences of the mind in critical situations than today's guest, Paralympian cyclist Neil Fachie MBE.

Neil is here to share some of the powerful tools and techniques he's picked up on his own journey, that have allowed him to form an impregnable sense of resilience and positivity in the face of adversity.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Neil has, in recent years, made a successful transition into the world of business coaching. It's a world that shares many similarities with high-performance competitive sport, in that it also requires focus, determination and working towards long term goals.
  • After pinning his hopes on competing in the Paralympian Games 2012, Neil was told that his funding was being cut, and that his dreams were essentially being taken away from him. It was as though the world had come crashing down.
  • From his lowest, Neil applied himself completely, finding success in different areas, and refusing to allow his impairment to drag him down. The result of this resilience was that at London 2012, Neil came away with a gold and silver medal, and a newfound sense of self-belief.
  • Neil's greatest success came from adjusting his mind-set, and being flexible enough to keep his eyes on his goals, but finding a new way in which to reach those goals.
  • Even at your lowest points, you will always have strengths. You will always have skills and benefits that outweigh those of others.
  • Developing a healthy mind-set is the practice of listening to our inner monologue, and refining our ability to filter them. By focusing on the positive voice, and less on the negative one, we build mental fortitude.
  • There are five types of self-talk, with only four being beneficial:
    • Calming
    • Instructional
    • Positive motivation
    • Negative motivation
    • Purely negative self-talk is not beneficial, and can serve to bring us down
  • Three word mantras are an effective way of jolting our brains back into focus during trying times. They can help to re-align our mind-set, and set us back on the road towards our aims.
  • One of the key tools Neil uses in order to correct his mind-set, is the visualisation technique. Sport taught Neil the value of visualising goals ahead of time, in order to make achieving them just that much more possible.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I went from being very athletic, to overweight and depressed'

‘I thought “I'm not necessarily done yet”'

‘What are my strengths? What am I good at?'

‘You're putting your brain through the logical process of doing something'

'That stress can be really useful at times'
