Thyroid Multivitamin: Do they actually work? (What to look for in your multi)

Should you take a thyroid multivitamin?
The answer is maybe, but it really depends on your situation. Not everyone who has thyroid disease should take a thyroid multivitamin.
Why? Because there are better options. It's almost always better to take supplements that directly support your thyroid and these are not the same thing as a thyroid multivitamin.
Having said that, there are people who would benefit from using a thyroid multivitamin.
These people include:
- Those who haven't used a multivitamin (of any kind) in a long time (more than 1-2 years).
- Those who have multiple known or suspected nutrient deficiencies (a multivitamin will help replace all of these lost levels).
- People who are confused about thyroid supplements! (It's better to do SOMETHING than nothing if you are confused).
If you fit into these categories then it's time to figure out which supplement you should be taking. And if you do decide to use a thyroid multivitamin there are certain nutrients that you want to look for which directly help your thyroid.
Make sure your multivitamin contains the following:
A therapeutic DOSE of these vitamins:
- Vitamin D3 (you'll want to use at least 1,000 IU's up to 2,000 IU's per day)
- Magnesium (your magnesium dose should be at least 100mg per serving)
- Methylated B Vitamins (make sure that your b vitamins are pre-activated or pre-methylated)
- Zinc (at least 5+ mg per day)
- Selenium (at least 50mcg per serving but no more than 150mcg)
- Iodine (look for at least 50mcg on up to 200mcg per day)
You'll also want to look for ADDITIONAL ingredients (or bonus ingredients, as I like to call them) which include things like:
- Anything which is anti-inflammatory (curcumin, fish oil, etc.)
- Anything which improves gut health (probiotics, L-glutamine, etc.)
- Adrenal adaptogens (things which improve your cortisol also improve your thyroid)
- Botanicals and herbs (these can directly improve your thyroid)

If you don't want to use that one, it's fine, just be sure to find one that meets the criteria listed above.
