Cimeters or curved bladed swords were known in the ancient Near East in Biblical times prior to Lehi's departure from Jerusalem. Although they were once considered out of place in the Nephite record, new evidence indicates that they were known in ancient Mesoamerica during the time of the Book of Mormon.
