Peter writes during a time of increasing persecution as believers faced the increasing hostility of Nero and the Roman Empire. The lessons he teaches them and us are very clear: God does not want us to be surprised by suffering; rather, we must be prepared for suffering so that we can endure it like our Saviour, in a way that brings glory to God who is ever faithful.
