Today is August 10th, and welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and I'm happy you are here with me today.
Now, I’ve got some sweet news to share – today is National S'mores Day! Whether you’re a camping enthusiast or just someone with a sweet tooth, there’s no denying the simple joy of roasting marshmallows over a crackling fire, sandwiching them between graham crackers with a square of chocolate, and biting into that gooey, delicious mess. It’s one of those nostalgic treats that bring back memories of summer nights under the stars, sharing stories, and laughing around the campfire. Even if you’re not near a campsite today, there’s no rule against making some s’mores in the comfort of your own kitchen – just don’t let anyone catch you roasting marshmallows over a candle!
Well, I will be near a campsite today... in fact - I'm going camping. And not your usual pull your car into a site and set up camping. No... we are hiking 10 kilometrage into the mountains and setting up camp on a ice cold river's beach. It has been a looong time since I've gone hiking with a tent and sleeping bag and food on my back.
It sounds like fun... right??
In the spirit of National S'mores Day and all the outdoor adventures that come with it, I’ve chosen a quote that perfectly captures the essence of why we venture into the wilderness, leaving the comforts of home behind. This one’s from writer and environmentalist John Muir, who famously said,
“The mountains are calling and I must go.”
John Muir wasn’t just talking about a physical journey into the mountains. His words resonate with that deep, almost primal urge we sometimes feel to disconnect from the noise of everyday life and reconnect with something simpler, something more natural. The mountains, forests, and campfires draw us out not just to escape, but to find a part of ourselves that can sometimes get lost in the shuffle of daily responsibilities.
Think about the act of making s'mores. It’s not just about the sweet treat at the end – it’s the process, the patience, the gentle rotating of the marshmallow to get that perfect golden brown, the anticipation as the chocolate melts just right. It’s a simple pleasure that’s magnified by the environment you’re in – the fresh air, the open sky, and the shared experience with those around you. Just like the mountains call to Muir, s’mores call to us – reminding us to savor life’s little joys, to gather with loved ones, and to find contentment in simplicity.
Ahhh... I love S'mores. but unfortunately for us there is a fire ban and we won't be able to have a fire at our campsite. And I don't think I'd want to pack logs of firewood for 10 km either. So I won't be enjoying a S'More today. But I think I can find room for a can of IPA and don't worry... it will be cold. Remember the ice cold river I mentioned. I love cold plunges and cold IPA.
So, enough about me... what about YOU! Maybe today’s the day to answer the call – whether it’s a quick hike, a backyard campout, or just taking a moment to enjoy a s’more. These small, intentional acts can ground us, bring us peace, and remind us of the beauty that’s all around us – sometimes in the most unexpected places.
As you go about your day, let John Muir’s words echo in your mind: “The mountains are calling and I must go.” Whether your mountains are literal or metaphorical, take the time to listen to what’s calling you. And, of course, don’t forget to treat yourself to a s’more or two – after all, today’s the perfect day for it.
Thank you for joining me on The Daily Quote. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off, and since I'll be in the mountains tomorrow night and won't be able to record a Daily Quote... I'll record tomorrow's episode right now... so you won't have to miss a Daily Quote.
Have a wonderful day, and enjoy those s’mores!
